Tighter security

A spate of shooting incidents at football matches has prompted a police move to boost security at open venues.
At a media conference yesterday, police public relations officer Inspector David Welch avoided branding recent outbreaks of violence at matches “a trend” but said the police would be talking shortly with sporting organizations and private entities to discuss tightening up security.
“We need to talk, because it is clear that sporting organizations can’t simply think about finance anymore. They also have to think seriously about security,” Welch told reporters at the police’s Roebuck Street headquarters.
Welch’s comments came as police pressed ahead with investigations in the murder of Damien Omar Mitchell, 28, who was shot in the head at a football match at the Victor “Gas” Clarke sporting centre in Carrington Village on Monday, the New Year holiday.
