George Washington House at the Garrison, St Michael, was transformed into one big luau village for the annual Island Mas Breakfast Party, which came off last Sunday. Patrons, in their colourful outfits, complete with leis around their necks to match the Hawaiian-themed all-inclusive event, were jamming from early in the morning to all the latest Barbadian and Trinidadian soca hits. It was a non-stop dancing session that went right down until about 2:30 p.m.
Mikey Mercer, who took this year’s Party Monarch, Sweet Soca and People’s Monarch titles, was also there to further whip up the already frenzied bunch with his Crop Over 2012 hits. Mr Dale also put in an appearance.
Also spotted at this event was American actor Malik Yoba, of the television series Alphas.
Dubbed The Trini-Bajan Experience, the event lived up to the concept with edible offerings from both countries, including buljol, doubles, corn soup, samosas and fishcakes. A cocktail bar, which kept bartenders busy serving up mojitos and other exotic drinks, complemented the other drinks that were on offer to quench the thirst on a picture perfect sunny day. Also stationed among the tents dotting the lawns at George Washington House was a snow cone cart that was also a favourite among the partying patrons, which helped to beat the heat.
Peter Clarke of Island Mas said he was happy with the turnout and was glad that once again people were enjoying the event, now in its sixth year.
Richard Rollocks, also part of Island Mas, explained the concept behind the luau village created at the venue, adding the aim was to blend something tropical with Crop Over. Rollocks said this was the second year the event was held at this location.
“We are bringing a Trini-Bajan experience to the Crop Over crowd,” he added. (CM)
