DEAR CHRISTINE: Young artist just wants a chance

Dear Christine,
I am a 22-year-old female student at The University of the West Indies (UWI). I currently work as a freelance graphic artist but I am actually an aspiring singer, rapper, songwriter and musician. I love Barbados to the core and I represent the 246 with pride. However, it saddens me that there are not many outlets for artists here on the island.
I have over 100 written songs and every day I add more to my repertoire. I have songs in several different genres including but not limited to rap, rhythm and blues, alternative, rock and calypso. I have sought to record some of these songs but due to the bad experiences with producers, who are more interested in sexual activity, I have become discouraged. I also have a strong stage presence and have been performing for several years at many local events.
I am at the place where I have no problem writing for other artists as I just wish to make music.
I believe in my art; it’s my life. I am hoping someone who has genuine intentions sees my letter in your column and responds. I just wish to make music because that’s where my heart is. My job does not pay that well. Basically, I work on what assignments come my way and that money pays the bills and my university tuition, which I am struggling to pay at the moment. However, I never let life discourage me. I am a hard worker and I believe in giving my all in every aspect of my life.
I am leaving my contact information with you and I am giving you have the permission to pass it on to anyone who should ask for it, expresses an interest in working with me, or in helping me in any positive way – even if it is just to give an encouraging word. Thank you in advance. Take care.
– C.W.
Dear C.W,
Your letter has touched me, especially when I see the length you have gone through in your attempt to fulfil your dream.
I truly hope that you receive lots of positive responses. I will be sure to pass on your name and contact information.
Hang in there and don’t be discouraged. I’m sure things will work out. Just give it time.
– CHRISTINE
