Union calls for rules on mental health

Concerned?about the hundreds of hours lost every year to stress and depression, a leading trade unionist has called for regulations concerning mental health.
Assistant general secretary of the Barbados Workers’ Union, Orlando “Gabby”?Scott, said he was worried about the impact that stress, anxiety and burnout were having on the local population.
Scott expressed his concerns during a National Initiative of Service Excellence?workshop (NISE)) at Solidarity House yesterday that had at its topic Organizations Recognizing Employee Excellence – A Key Towards Building A Better Economy.
“We need a regulation governing stress, burnout, depression and anxiety within the workplace, because legislation can’t deal with everything.
Safety and health officer in the Ministry of Labour and Social Security, Nia Salankey, said the new health and safety legislation, which was proclaimed last month, spoke volumes about the importance of a safe working environment and adequate welfare facilities. (MK)
