THE LIVES and deaths of the six young women who perished in the Campus Trendz fire on September 3, 2010 must mean something.
Speaking a Press conference at the Clement Payne Centre to update on the criminal suits filed on behalf of Nikkita Belgrave, Kellishaw Olliverre and Tiffany Harding attorney and co-ordinator of the September 3 Foundation David Comissiong said the Government needs to make some major changes to shops.
Comissiong, who was accompanied by fellow coordinator Abdul Rahman, said whether the case was settled in or out of court the affected families would want to see the Government commit in a “very serious and concrete way” to dealing with the issue of the “inherently dangerous” conditions under which shop assistants are working in Barbados.
“The most appropriate way in which they could be invested with some meaning is if, as a result of their tragic deaths, some serious remedial measures are put in place so that this doesn’t happen again in Barbados; that we become very serious about the safety about shop assistants and patrons to shops in the event of a fire,” Comissiong said.
Two men were charged with murder, burglary and arson in relation to the incident. (YB)
