OUTSIDE THE PULPIT: It’s time for change

“But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles. They shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.” (Isaiah 40:31).
This week I have a very important question for the West Indies Cricket Board and the selectors. Why is it that the team which was beaten in both Test matches in six days in India was not changed? Why?
Is it a case of cost-saving during these economic times or are the selectors sleeping? There should have been a few changes, especially in the fast bowling department.
Miguel Cummins from Barbados should be part of the fast bowling attack for the New Zealand tour. I have found it to be very embarrassing that the fast bowlers who were taken to India; Tino Best, Sheldon Cottrell, and Shannon Gabriel – were all failures. I have to ask another question. How is it that India played a new fast bowler and he hit the ground running.
I do think that it is the wrong balance for New Zealand, for the pitches there will encourage seam and swing rather turn and bounce. Another fast bowler was surely required instead of Veerasammy Permaul who was dropped for the second Test in India.
The time is ripe for a change at the top and Chris Gayle’s injury may be a blessing in disguise. It has made way for young Kraigg Brathwaite, who should have been in the squad from the beginning.
Since the politicians brought back Gayle into Test cricket, he has not done anything towards the West Indies case. There must be changes. I prefer a team to be beaten with younger players rather than continue to be beaten with players like Gayle and Ramdin. I would hope that a place is found for Kirk Edwards in the Test team as he is one of those batsmen who can bat for long periods.
And please leave Sammy alone; he is a better captain than Dwayne Bravo. If not Sammy – then who?
Happy Independence to all my readers.
