IT WAS billed as a clash between Levi Cadogan and Mario Burke but 2009 CARIFTA Games’ gold medallist Shekeim Greaves spoiled the party for his two younger sprint rivals in the marquee 100 metres at the Joseph Payne Memorial Classic at the National Stadium yesterday.
With the attention centred on Cadogan and Burke in lanes three and four, Greaves sped down the track on the outside in lane seven to win in 10.50 seconds.
A fast-finishing Burke, almost caught him on the line as he also clocked 10.50 but was beaten by 7000th of a second. Cadogan (10.64) was third while Debarge Carrington, who won his heat, was fourth overall in 10.92 seconds.
Birthday girl Tristan Evelyn established a new meet record of 11.89 seconds in winning the Under-17 girls’ 100 metres from her Rising Stars clubmate Timeka Jordan (12.47) and Danae Gill (12.69) of Blazers.
Pacers’ Kentoine Browne (11.03) sprinted to an emphatic victory in the Under-17 boys’ 100 metres, leaving High Performance Programme’s (HPP) Josiah Atkins (11.53) in his wake.
The women’s Open 100 metres attracted just four starters and Sports Cave Hill’s Sharon Larrier took 12.70 seconds to reach the finish line.
Earlier, Rivaldo Leacock of Rising Stars set a new record of 50.72 seconds in the Under-17 boys’ 400 metres.
The men’s quarter-mile was won by Christopher Davis in 48.80 seconds from The Lodge’s Akeem McCollin (49.92) and Freedom Striders’ Romarco Thompson (49.93).
Sada Williams of Coleridge & Parry sustained her encouraging early season form, winning the  Open Women’s 400 metres in 59.47 seconds from Ayana Morgan (59.62), who had won her heat.
Tiana Bowen of Rising Stars won the Under-17 girls’ 400 metres in 58.57 seconds from Jaria Hoyte (60.24) while Rosette Hoyte won the Under-15 girls’ 400 metres in 60.59 from Shonita Brome (60.69) and Tia Lewis (61.30).
The Lodge School girl Akayla Morris, who is now with the HPP, sent an early warning to the Under-15 girls in her first year in this division, winning the 100 metres in 12.70 metres from SMS’ Xhane Greenidge (13.06) and Shaquana Scott (13.28).
Tramaine Smith of The Lodge School slammed the field in the 100 metres with a 11.59 clocking.
BC Trac’s duo Nathan Fergusson (12.04) and Hasani Lowe (12.09) were second and third.
The Haddock twins, Leilana (13.28) and Ajani (12.93) won the Under-13 girls’ and boys’ 100 metres, respectively.
On the field, Ashley Williams with a toss of 13.66 in the open women’s shot put and Romario Antoine, who hurled the discus 41.66 metres to win the Under-20 boys’ event, established meet records.
Kemar Gooding also won the Open Men’s shot with a put of 13.35 metres while Justin Adams-Yearwood had a winning put of 11.63 in the Under-17 boys’ event and Dequan Lovell triumphed in the Under-20 shot with a put of 14.17 metres.   
Zahra McCaskie of The St Michael School won the Under-17 girls’ javelin with a distance of 21.79 while schoolmate Holly-Ann Hunte won the Open women’s javelin with a distance of 33.87 metres.
Blazers’ Ariel Burke set up a new meet record for the Under-17 high jump, clearing the bar at 1.50 metres while Janeill Craigg of Elite Distance threw the javelin 59.59 metres.
