TRADE UNION leader Sir Roy Trotman has warned that fights in and around the labour movement can result in “tremendous casualties”.
He made the comment yesterday evening while addressing the annual May Day thanksgiving service at the Barbados Workers’ Union’s (BWU) Harmony Hall headquarters, St Michael, conducted by Dean of St Michael’s Cathedral Dr Frank Marshall.
Sir Roy spoke against the backdrop of differences of opinion between general secretary of the National Union of Public Workers (NUPW) Dennis Clarke and NUPW National Council member Danny Gill and some criticisms of the BWU’s role in the recent sugar industry strike by Government ministers.
“If each of us only remains on the periphery, shooting at each other, then what we will do is to have tremendous casualties which our hospitals will not be able to take care of,” Sir Roy told the gathering that included Governor General Sir Elliott Belgrave and trade union leaders, including Clarke.
