Government will be running away from a debate on the economy by making a ministerial statement instead of having the regular Budget presentation, says the Opposition Barbados Labour Party (BLP).

This reaction came yesterday after it was revealed that Minister of Finance Chris Sinckler will deliver the statement when the House of Assembly meets on Tuesday, rather than have a Budget before year end.

It has been suggested that Sinckler will look at the performance of the economy and outline Government’s plan to achieve their fiscal target for this financial year, which ends next March in the statement.

And, he could possibly announce an adjustment in the basket of goods presently exempted from VAT, which would be consistent with the recommendations of the International Monetary Fund’s recent advice on reforming Barbados’ tax regime.
