CAN ANYONE EXPLAIN to me why so many Bajan motorists seem to have a love affair with stopping in intersections controlled by traffic lights?
Every day we see it. It’s rush hour, traffic is heavy and motorists going east to west or in the opposite direction have the green light. Then it switches to amber, which everyone knows is a warning that the red light is only seconds away.
But for some strange reason the next four or five drivers believe they should keep going, and because traffic ahead is snarled, which they could have seen long before, they end up blocking the intersection.
Now the light turns green for motorists heading north to south, or in the opposite direction, but of course no one can move because a collection of idiots decided the amber light means nothing.
Anywhere else in the world offending motorists would get a ticket because it is an offence to enter an intersection if you cannot make it all the way across, but not here.
The same applies to pedestrian crossings. Traffic is barely inching along and some motorist comes to a pedestrian crossing, and rather than stopping ahead at the line and waiting for the vehicle ahead to move at least one length beyond the crossing so he can then drive all the way over, Mr Sensible keeps inching ahead, blocking the crossing and forcing pedestrians to cross other than on the safety of the zebra markings.
Why are these two rules so hard to follow?
