THIRTEEN YEARS AGO, Shemia Odaine was only nine months old and the lone survivor in a horrific motor car accident along Mount Wilton Road, St Joseph.

Her mother, Sheldine Hoyte-Odaine, a Division One netballer with the Rockers and Belleplaine teams, and grandmother Yvonne Hoyte died in that accident on March 8, 2002.

But yesterday the speedy Odaine was in celebratory mood, playing a major role in Haynes House winning the overall title at the Alleyne School’s inter-house sports at the National Stadium.

She swept the Under-15 girls’ races, winning the 100, 400 and the 200 metres, the last in a new record time of 26.47 seconds to be age group champion in that division with a whopping 86 points.

Before yesterday’s action she had also won the 800, long jump, shot put and javelin while finishing second in the 800 and discus.

In a brief interview with WEEKEND SPORT, the Bruce Vale, St Andrew resident, who is the daughter of former Pickwick and BCL fast bowler Kelso Odaine, promised to do her best at BSSAC next month and “hopefully win the 100 and 200 metres”. (EZS)
