Obesity blocking cancer treatment, says expert

OBESITY AND OVERWEIGHT result in poorer outcomes from treatment among cancer victims in Barbados.

The observation was made by Canadian academic and prostate cancer patient, Dr Richard Wassersug, in a recent lecture entitled Prehabilitation And Survivorship delivered at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre.

Wassersug introduced the two new concepts to Barbadians in a bid to stimulate new thinking about cancer, the psychological approach, and responses to the disease and its treatment among victims and caregivers.

The university professor acknowledged the obesity problem was not peculiar to Barbados, however, adding it was also the case in other parts of the Caribbean and in North America. He suggested an appropriate diet and exercise programme could be effective aids in the recovery process for the cancer patient. (GC)
