‘Control panic’ during a tsunami

PANIC IS NOT a “useful” response when a natural disaster like a tsunami or earthquake strikes.

That early caution is coming from seismologist at the Seismic Research Centre, Dr Joan Latchman, who is in Barbados with some other staff from the centre assisting the Department of Emergency Management with their sensitisation drive for the month of March, which has been designated Tsunami And Earthquake Smart Month.

Speaking to the media after a lecture on Earthquake & Tsunami Preparedness at Banks Breweries, Newton, Christ Church, yesterday, Latchman said part of their thrust is to get people to try to temper that natural reaction.

“If you drill, once you have the information and you put your measures in place, even though you’re afraid – because of course fear will come – panic is not a useful response and we have to do everything in our power to avoid that panic,” Latchman stated. (YB)
