DEFENDING champion Kim Holder and last year’s losing finalist Rachel Smith will meet in one semi-final of the Touch of Class Freida Nicholls women’s road tennis competition at the Deighton “Pa” Roach Centre in Bush Hall tonight.

Holder and Smith advanced in different styles, with the undisputed women’s champion Holder stopping a gutsy challenge from newcomer Kelly Ann Lashley 21-14, 21-14. Smith had to fight from a game down to oust the tall Esterphyne Holder 14-21, 21-12, 21-13 in a thrilling night of tennis watched by a large crowd.

Tonight’s other semi-final pits the attacking Sheldene Walrond against the returning Abigail Haynes, the last woman to have defeated Holder. Walrond had to hold off a tough battle from Haynes’ mother, Carlyn Haynes, before squeezing out a 23-21, 21-17 win.
