A SURINAMESE WOMAN will spend 12 months in prison after she pleaded guilty to bringing cocaine into Barbados in her stomach.
Police say 21-year-old Rakada Chernaya Klaverweida arrived by air from Trinidad on June 20 and was interviewed by police after clearing immigration.
She was referred to the hospital where she passed out 24 packages containing the drug. The packages weighed 250 grammes.
Klaverweida was charged with possession of cocaine, possession with intent to supply, trafficking and importation.
When she appeared in the District “B” Magistrates Court on Thursday she was sentenced to 12 months in prison on the charges of trafficking and possession with intent. She was convicted, reprimanded and discharged on the charges of importation and possession.
On Wednesday, a Surinamese man was sentenced to 18 months in prison after he admitted to smuggling one kilogramme of cocaine into the island in his stomach. (PR/NB)
