BRA for Customs

THE CUSTOMS and Excise Department is definitely going under the Barbados Revenue Authority (BRA).

This was announced by Minister of Finance Chris Sinckler yesterday after what was described as a cordial and satisfactory meeting between officials of the Barbados Workers’ Union (BWU, the National Union of Public Workers (NUPW) and the BRA at Government Headquarters.

The announcement came after almost a year of resistance from customs workers, that recently escalated into various forms of industrial action and ended only last week.

Sinckler, who acted as facilitator at the three-and-a-half-hour meeting, said “considerable progress had been made” in relation to major issues such as supersession and the appointment of officers, which customs employees had been demanding be addressed before they transitioned.
