THE DEMOLITION of Andrews Sugar Factory has begun, but some nearby residents are not too happy about it.

It is not the actual demolition – to make way for a multimillion-dollar, state-of-the-art, sugar factory – that has upset them, but the fact that a part of the work involves fencing off a nearby playing field that had been home to many of their social activities.

“The youts ain’t got no playground now; they used to play football and cricket there and now we ain’t got nothing. Plus, that kite-flying t’ing was a good thing. Why they stop it?” said Vear Brathwaite.
