HEAD OF THE largest public sector union, Akanni McDowall, and Donville Inniss, the minister charged with spurring business development, clashed yesterday on air over layoffs and who was really looking out for workers.
Inniss, Minister of Industry and Commerce, was a guest on Starcom Network’s call-in programme Brass Tacks’ Sagicor Business Review, with moderator David Ellis and a host of other leaders discussing the state of the island’s affairs.
McDowall, president of the National Union of Public Workers (NUPW), called in when the issue of the Customs Department came up, telling Inniss he could not allow him to get away with a statement to the effect that Customs officers were allowing certain items into the island. He accused Inniss of smearing Customs officers.
The minister dismissed the claim and challenged McDowall on what the union was doing for laid off workers as host Ellis jumped in with the contentious issue of cameras in the ports of entry.
