WITH MOST OF THE “star” athletes resting, Antoni Hoyte-Small and Nathan Fergusson were the only two shining lights, qualifying for the CARIFTA Games at a low-key February Classic at the National Stadium on Saturday.
Hoyte-Small, the silky-smooth 16-year-old sprinter from Queen’s College, qualified in the Under-18 Boys’ 400 metres with a winning time of 48.56 seconds, inside the required standard of 48.60.
What made Hoyte-Small’s achievement even more remarkable was that he had to race against the clock in a small four-man field. Shamar Elliott was a distant second, about 30 metres behind in 52.74 minutes.
Fergusson, who switched to Quantum Leap club this year, clocked 14.34 seconds in winning the Under-18 Boys’ 110-metre hurdles to book his ticket to CARIFTA in Grenada at Easter.
