THE PUSH FOR brain death legislation has found its way to the country’s highest legal offices.
Chief executive officer of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH), Dr Dexter James, confirmed that the hospital had been in contact with the office of Chief Justice Sir Marston Gibson and that of the Attorney General.
Speaking Tuesday evening at the official reopening of the Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU), which was renovated by the John D. Thompson Memorial Trust, James explained that the QEH treated renal failure using haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis transplantation.
Haemodialysis alone was costing roughly $16 million a year, 11 per cent of the hospital’s budget, to manage close to 290 patients who needed the services, he said.
