BARBADIAN TRACK AND FIELD STAR Akela Jones made a short stop on the road to Rio this past Friday, July 1, at the Nation Publishing.
She was there to sign branded Akela Jones special edition T-shirts purchased by the public, as part of a special fundraising drive.
This initiative was launched to help her cover the cost of her training and nutrition as she makes plans to go for gold at the upcoming Summer Olympics Games in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil.
The Nation Publishing took the opportunity to again show its support for local athletics by handing over to Jones a generous monetary contribution to help her properly prepare to represent Barbados at the 2016 Olympics. The company will also be spearheading an advertising campaign to promote the special edition T-shirts.
Jones, who qualified for five events, will compete in just two,the heptathlon and high jump, to increase her chances of reaching the medal podium.
The corporate cheque was presented by Chief Executive Officer of Nation Group, Anthony Shaw, who, along with several members of the managerial and other staff of the company, purchased T-shirts.
“It is important for corporate Barbados to support local athletics at various stages. While we as a company sponsor athletic events and clubs, I am happy that we are also able to make a tangible contribution to Akela, one of our top athletic contenders striving not only for Olympic gold but to bring glory to Barbados.”
Jones smiled, greeted and chatted with fans, as she signed the white and black special edition T-shirts, which are accented with gold and feature the hashtag ‘What Limits?’. The fundraising drive is ongoing and the public can visit Nation House in Fontabelle during the week from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. to secure their unsigned T-shirts for only $30 and help Akela win gold for Barbados.(PR)
