NATIONAL HERO Sir Garfield Sobers headed a list of 25 Barbados sports icons who were saluted at a Night with the Stars at the Barbados Hilton here late Saturday.
Olympic bronze medallists James Wedderburn and Obadele Thompson as well as World Championships gold medallist Ryan Brathwaite and former world draughts champion Ronald “Suki” King were among those named at the gala.
Swimmer Leah Stancil (nee Martindale ), the first black woman to reach the final of the 50 metres freestyle at the Olympic Games, many-times Woodbine champion jockey Patrick Husbands , perennial Sol Barbados Rally champion Roger Skeete and special athlete Tyson Browne were also named among the esteemed group.
Former West Indies captain and double world record holder for the highest individual Test and first-class scores Brian Lara was a special guest at the function.
Sporting Icon Freida Nicholls is presented her award by Minister of Social Care Steve Blackett.
