Bread prices rising

MAKING A SANDWICH just got a whole lot more expensive thanks to the recently imposed National Social Responsibility Levy (NSRL), which added two per cent on all imports from September 1.

Yesterday, officials from three of the country’s largest bread makers – Purity Bakeries, Zephirin’s Bakeries and Nicholls Baking Company – responded to questions about the potential impact of the levy imposed last month by Minister of Finance Chris Sinckler in his annual Budget.

Purity Bakeries’ sales and distribution manager, Christopher Symmonds, said they had been forced to increase the price of all their products in response to the NSRL.

“We have adjusted the price of the units in line with the requirements of the National Social Responsibility Levy, which requires that we add the NSRL to the price of all of our baked goods effective September 1,” he told the DAILY NATION. (AD)
