JAMAR OMAR SCOTT will be remembered in a variety of ways. He was a hard-working employee, a pleasant and fun-loving individual, a rally enthusiast and a caring brother.

But above all things, he was a devoted father.

And during a thanksgiving service at a packed St Bartholomew’s Anglican Church yesterday afternoon, his sister Lee-Ann Scott-Lewis asked the hundreds of mourners gathered to remember her brother in that way.

In a moving yet sometimes amusing eulogy, Scott-Lewis said that Scott’s seven-year-old son Jamari Scantlebury was the apple of his eye. She said the life of the former Parkinson Memorial and Samuel Jackman Prescod Polytechnic student changed dramatically the day his son was born.

“He was a loving friend, relative, brother, son, but most of all an extra loving father. . . . I don’t think I would have done my brother any justice by not saying this. As a sister, Jamar is gone and we are all here. . . . Jamar was a very devoted father, very, very devoted, and I hope that the persons here today, be they male or female, that we all take a leaf from Jamar’s book,” she said.

Scott, 30, passed away on September 3 after succumbing to injuries sustained in a fire at his workplace Purity Bakeries on August 25.

Long before the 2 p.m. start, hundreds made their way to the quaint church to pay their respects to Scott. Several of his co-workers donned badges and shirts in tribute to the man affectionately known as “Barry” or “Breadman”.

Among those in attendance were Senator Wilfred Abrahams and general secretary of the Barbados Workers’ Union Toni Moore, as well as management from the bakery.

In her 20-minute sermon, Reverend Jillian Crawford told those in attendance that Scott’s untimely death was a reminder of just how frail life was.

“As we share and reflect let this time be for us a moment to reflect on the frailty of human life and the importance for all of us as we go through our lives to be a blessing in this life, for we do not know what the future holds,” she said.

The interment was held at Coral Ridge Memorial Gardens. (RB)
