SEVERAL BARBADIAN TOURISM students in The Bahamas say they are praying the group of islands is spared the worst of Hurricane Matthew’s wrath.

Up to early this morning, one student who is studying hotel management on the island of New Providence told the NATION she and others had secured food, water, and batteries and were anxiously waiting for the category four hurricane to pass.

The student, who attends the Centre for Hospitality and Tourism Management, said storm conditions had begun affecting country from last night and the approximately 20 Barbadian university students were prepared to stay put, though one of them flew to St Maarten to escape Matthew, which has killed several people in Haiti.

“An [electricity] line fell next to my house just now and it is sparking . . . It was sparking for an hour. The lights were off before but they turned them back on. Winds are super high and the hurricane isn’t actually on my island yet,” the student said in a message sent about 5:45 this morning.

The student, who is staying off campus in university-approved accommodation, said some of the landlords had shuttered most of the windows, and provided sandbags to prevent water damage.

Last week Barbados was shut down for two days as what later became Matthew passed the island. (GE)
