Crane crisis

FISHERMEN IN BARBADOS have been waiting for some good news regarding the availability of a crane, which would allow them to have their vessels hauled in or out the water to complete important repairs and make it easier to fish for longer periods.

After more than eight years in limbo, that good news is now on the horizon.

The fishermen have been a frustrated lot because a special crane imported into Barbados has never been made operational, but the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Fisheries is now promising that the crane, located at the Bridgetown Fisheries Complex, will be put into operation some time this year.

Permanent Secretary Elsworth Reid told the SATURDAY SUN he didn’t want to get the hopes of the hundreds of fishermen up for no reason, since he had met with them two years ago about the same problem and it had not been solved, but promised the crane should be in working order sometime in 2017. (BA)
