Call for stronger rehab programmes

MARIJUANA ABUSE continues to be a burden to Barbados’ justice system, but more is being done to rehabilitate its users.

Cheryl Willoughby, director of the Criminal Justice Research and Planning Unit in the Office of the Attorney General said that, based on research, offenders were no longer being incarcerated for just lighting up a spliff (marijuana). cheryl-willoughby

She said that over 98 per cent of those charged for use of the drug received community service as their punishment or were referred to social workers.

“The medical model is being applied to those who are at risk, but you would find those people who are actually given sentences for marijuana either have outstanding warrants, they are either on bail or they were charged for trafficking or possession near a school or something more serious.” (TG)
