Mental health ills ‘kept secret’

Some employees are keeping their mental health problems away from bosses because they are afraid of losing their jobs if they ask for help.

Senior consultant psychiatrist at the Psychiatric Hospital, Dr Brian McLachlan, said in the wider society, people developed mental health issues and were afraid of disclosing them in the workplace because they were also worried they would be stigmatised.

“What we are trying to do is to sensitise employers to if they believe their workers are having some mental health challenges, to help them know where they can access services and for employers to be supportive [so they] come back to work better functioning,” he said.

McLachlan was speaking yesterday after the Psychiatric Hospital’s church service at Mount of Praise Wesleyan Holiness Church, Tudor Bridge, St Michael, to mark the start of Mental Health Week. (LK)
