THE Worchester Polytechnic Institute of the United States wrapped up the Goodwill volleyball winter three-match series against the Barbados Juniors with another convincing victory at Oldbury on Tuesday night.
WPI, who had taken the opening “test” on Sunday in four sets repeated with a come from behind win last night 14-25, 25-15, 25-18, 25-19 to take an unassailable 2-0 lead.
The local juniors had looked more focus in taking the opening set with their improved attack and net defence. However, an injury to outside attacker Aaliyah Durant saw the Juniors losing some momentum.
Durant did return to the court but the locals never regained the upper hand as they were outmatched by the visitors’ superior all round play. Only captain Ashley Jordan, Xhane Greenidge and Janiyah Drakes seemed up to the task of aggressive spiking. The poor passing and ground defence of the Juniors also handed the visitors points in bunches which saw them struggling to match up in the next three sets in spite of some rallies at times.
WPI displayed great court craft in touching almost every ball in defence while the Juniors allowed simple balls to repeatedly drop as they seemed unsure as to who should play what.
The Juniors would have been hoping to salvage some pride when they played the final “test” yesterday evening at Oldbury. (KB)
