Joshua’s sky high hopes

Joshua Uzunovic wasn’t even at the legal age to drive a car when for the first time he single-handedly steered an aircraft over the seas of Barbados.

He was just 13 years old, an enthusiastic aspiring pilot sitting high at the controls of a four-seat, single-engine Cessna Skyhawk and flying more than 100 miles to neighbouring St Vincent and the Grenadines for lobster runs.

Where were his parents? His father Emir was seated right behind him enjoying the ride and encouraging his son.

Now 24, Josh is a first officer for Tui, where he started last May. He recently flew into the island on his first official flight on the new Barbados route for the United Kingdom-based travel operator.

With pilot wings pinned to his chest, a jacket thrown over his shoulder and a broad grin on his face, Josh walked with his dad into the lobby of Divi Southwinds Resort, where his crew was staying.

There appeared to be an aura of confidence about this young man even though he wasn’t very talkative generally – unless it was to discuss planes – and then his eyes lit up. (SDB Media)
