Quon retained his title and two new monarchs were crowned as the curtain came down on the 2019 Scotiabank Junior Calypso Monarch Competition last night at the Garfield Sobers Gymnasium.

Quon, who won the 13 to 18 category last year, emerged victorious in the newly created 15 to 18 age group with 82 points for his performance of Smart. The Mighty Bit Bit, who was second last year in the 7 to 12 group, won in the new 6-10 category, while Shontae took top honours among the 11-14 performers.

It is his last year in the competition, and Quon went out with a bang. De Overcomer, also in his final year, was second with 70 points, Yahandje was third with 68 and Raanan and A@-lee-aah tied for fourth with 62.

The Mighty Bit Bit blew away the other contestants to take the crown in the 6 to 10 age category with 100 points. The 7-year-old student of St Paul’s Primary School had a big presentation with De Style Of Old Calypso. Second place went to Dee Jay, followed by Riyah B and Le Andre.

Shontae was crowned queen of the 11 to 14 category, earning 90 points with Stop De Violence, four more than Xavi, who had an impressive rendition of Reduce Reuse Recycle. Mhizz Khibaba told Her Story to earn 68 points and a third place finish, while last year’s monarch, Browne Star, had to settle for fourth place with 62 points.

The competition is held in association with the HIV/AIDS Commission and IGM Stage Lighting.
