Gold and bronze at NACAC Age Group Championships

Tia Applewhaite won gold and Brieanna Boyce silver as the curtain came down on the North America, Central America and Caribbean (NACAC) Age Group Championships in El Salvador on Saturday.

Applewhaite topped the Under-13 Girls’ division with 2 750 points, placing second in the 800 metres in 2 minutes 33.67 seconds, two-hundredths of a second behind Trinidad and Tobago’s Kaori Robley who was second with 2 734. Her compatriot Chloe James claimed the bronze with 2 552 points, while Tia’s twin sister Tania was eighth with 2 444.

Boyce made up a lot of ground on the final day to claim bronze in the Under-15 girls’ division. She was second in the ball throw with 47.76 metres, third in the high jump with a clearance of 1.45m and was a commendable sixth in the 1 000 metres in 3 minutes 33.77 seconds. Skye Spencer-Layne, who was in second place overnight, fell off the pace and finished ninth with 3 766 points.

Yusleyni Monterrey of Cuba was won the Under-15 girls’ division with 4 154 points, 21 ahead of Trinidad and Tobago’s Janae DeGannes.

Among the boys, Aaron Massiah was ninth in the Under-13 division with 2 944 points, two places ahead of Keshawn Griffith who finished with 2 913.

Trinidad and Tobago, who had a very good championship with a medallist in every division, took gold via Immani Matthew who had 3 259 points. St Lucia’s Milan Mitchell was second with 3 218 and Euan Young of Jamaica won the bronze with 3 152 points.

Oliver Guzman of Nicaragua won the Under-15 boys’ division with 5 164 points, while the Trinidad and Tobago pair of Dorian Charles and Keone John were second and third, respectively with 5 099 and 4 955 points.

Barbadian Josiah Parris was sixth with 4 760 points and compatriot O’neil Cumberbatch ninth with 4 588. (SAT)
