GEORGETOWN – The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) confirmed that the ballot papers to be used for the March 2, regional and general elections have arrived here.

GECOM said the ballot papers arrived at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport early Friday and were taken to its officers under heavy police guard.

The printing of the ballots and other sensitive material were observed by election commissioners Charles Corbin and Sase Gunraj.

GECOM has said that an estimated 700 000 registered voters are eligible to cast ballots in the March 2 election that will be contested by nine political parties including the ruling coalition, A Partnership for National Unity (APNU), the main opposition People’s Progressive Party (PPP), A New and United Guyana, The New Movement, United Republican Party, Liberty and Justice Party, Change Guyana and Federal United Party.

Apart from the 2 500 polling stations, an additional 60 will be made available for the disciplined services, who will be casting their votes on February 21. (CMC)
