In the first two weeks of March, hotels have lost just over $1 million in cancellations amidst fears of the spread of the coronavirus.

President of the Barbados Hotel and Tourism Association (BHTA), Steve Austin, made the revelation to reporters yesterday, minutes after a press conference by Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley dealt with the fallout from the possible spread of the Covid-19 virus worldwide.

“We are currently polling our members and just for March alone, in terms of cancellations, it has been $1.2 million in loss of revenue,” Austin said.

He added those numbers were only from 49 of the 81 BHTA members who had provided information on cancellations and forward bookings.

“That accounted for a cancellation of 2 853 rooms. It’s quite significant and we are working now on an emergency plan through the BHTA to try to help our members during this time.” (BA)
