ALL’S WELL that ends well is a common expression acquired from one of Shakespeare’s several 17th century plays.
Over 400 years later in an entirely different context, it could only be conditionally applied to the West Indies late entry into the World Cup quarter-finals.
They beat lowly United Arab Emirates comfortably enough in their final qualifying pool match yesterday to boost their net run-rate to the required level; six hours later, Pakistan did the rest on their behalf with an impressive victory over Ireland, the other contenders for fourth spot from the pool of seven.
For the fourth time in the tournament, the West Indies were stricken by a sudden drop in intensity in the field and unadventurous tactics that allowed their inexperienced opponents to recover.
