This, essentially, was former prime minister Owen Arthur’s advice to the Freundel Stuart administration yesterday as he spoke to the state of the economy and last Friday’s downgrade of Barbados’ long-term sovereign credit rating from BB- to B by Standard & Poor’s (S&P), with a negative outlook.
Arthur, who served as minister of finance for 14 years from 1994 to January 2008, said the recovery of the Barbados economy was going to come not just by the Government itself proposing and doing things, but by the private sector, citizens and other stakeholders making the necessary adjustments when they were told exactly, “this is what is required”.
