Pilgrim: Speeding up system no easy task

Barbados’ judicial system has to find a way to work faster so people awaiting trial aren’t given the opportunity to get back on the streets and commit more crime.

But that won’t be easy, says a former president of the Bar Association.

Queen’s Counsel Andrew Pilgrim said only radical change to the time it takes between people being charged with serious crimes and when they go on trial can lead to a reduction in people getting bail for serious offences like murder and gun-related crimes.

“The issue about if people who are on bail allegedly commit crime is a very serious one. But it comes back to the main issue, which is, can we try people in a reasonable time,” he told THE NATION in a recent interview. (BA)
