Barbados’ graduation by the Inter-American Development Bank is not on the cards, according to the organization’s president Luis Alberto Moreno.
The United States has been proposing graduation of Barbados which would make the island ineligible for low-interest IDB loans for projects such as health, energy and the environment, education and housing.
But Moreno, who was in Barbados attending FOROMIC 2012, said the IDB did not have a graduation policy and he told the media at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre Tuesday that so far all the Barbados loans that had gone to the IDB board had been approved.
Responding to a question about Washington’s attempts, Moreno said: “My personal position on this has been one in which all credits from all member countries of the bank, if the quality of the loan and the quality of the projects merit the kind of standards that we have set out for ourselves, we will bring them up to our board and as always we have different opinions as it should be in the board.” (GC)
