SUPERMARKET OWNER Charles Chaderton says Tuesday’s double murder indicates it’s time to resume hanging in Barbados.
Chaderton’s 79-year-old brother Arthur was shot dead at his Salters, St George home, along with Arthur’s brother-in-law, Austrian-born Gerhart Metamara Stock.
“It’s very sad. I think it’s time to start a protest of some sort to have the hangings restarted,” the 77-year-old Chaderton told the SATURDAY SUN.
“We’re just putting people (killers) in prison for a short time and then they’re back on the street to do whatever they want.”
Chaderton said only enforcement of the death penalty would keep Barbados’ murder rate down.
He described the late civil engineer as “a very quiet chap” who liked jazz, classical music, reading and gardening and who did not let retirement stop him from helping friends seeking engineering solutions.
“He had a very good repertoire of classics and jazz, but he had a rounded appreciation of all types of music,” Chaderton reported. “He liked taking care of his fruit trees and his lawn. He liked reading, though I’m not too sure what he read.
“He was retired but he still used to do work for people, including friends, who wanted engineering specifications. He was very thorough in what he did and that’s why people respected him.
“But overall he was a very good person. We were neighbours for about 40 years and we were close. He will be missed by his family and friends.”
