Ellerton are the champions of the Ministry of Sport’s inaugural HIV/AIDS Block Draughts Tournament.
The St George side overcame a four-point first-half deficit to secure a 17-15 victory over Haynesville in the final on Monday night at the ministry’s offices at Mall Internationale, Haggatt Hall.
Ellerton took home the championship trophy and $800, while the runners-up collected $400 and a trophy.
Ellerton, who were down 10-6 at one stage, managed to stage a fightback.
Wayne Cadogan scored seven points and Olivere Ward had four points for the winners, while Adrian Birch, with seven points and Desmond Pilgrim, five, were the main performers for Haynesville.
In the third-place play-off, Jessamine Avenue of St Michael defeated Lammings of St Joseph 19-17.
Despite being a player short, Lammings forced Jessamine Avenue into a tie-breaker, which tournament MVP Mitchell Downes of Lammings lost to Wayne Forde.
For Jessamine Avenue, Wayne Forde had eight points and Owen Holligan three.
Adrian Bailey topscored for Lammings with eight points and Mitchell Downes had six points.
The final was attended by national female draughts champion Wilma Branch and Minister of Sport Stephen Lashley who said that the tournament would become an annual event. (HG)
