NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT SCHOLARSHIP winner Cabral Barriteau-Foster is looking to preserve and repair the island’s coast when he acquires his master’s degree in coastal engineering from the University of Plymouth in Britain.
Barriteau-Foster, who was awarded the scholarship from the Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development because he chose a “profession which is critical to national development”, said he was proud of himself and “anxious and ready to make a difference”.
“There is an acute shortage of coastal engineers in Barbados and the Caribbean. I have always wanted to practise as an engineer and live in Barbados, and for the first two years of my undergraduate degree I was searching for a way to rise above the pack of other engineers in Barbados and still have an exclusive niche that I could practise in.
“The coast is becoming more and more critical because every month another hotel starts building . . . . And now there is talk about a ferry system in Barbados; and if you are going to have a ferry, we will need a new dock for the boats to pull up at, and coastal engineers would be needed to assist in such projects,” said the former Queen’s College student who holds a Bachelor’s in civil engineering from the University of St Augustine.
The former national swimmer and member of the Barbados Cadet Corps thanked his parents Professor Dr Eudine Barriteau and Hugh Foster and the ministry for believing in him. (AH)
