PORT OF SPAIN – New anti-doping laws are to be introduced in Trinidad and Tobago which would make drug testing compulsory.
The Kamla Persad Bissessar administration is preparing to table the Anti-Doping in Sport Bill 2012, Newsday reported.
The bill, to be approved by the Cabinet sub-committee scrutinizing proposed laws, the Legislation Review Committee, is one of several on government’s parliamentary agenda for the upcoming months.
A new national anti-doping organization is expected to be introduced to supervise compulsory drug testing and police the use of drugs in local sport.
The bill proposes that Port of Spain formally adopts the World Anti-Doping Code and the UNESCO Convention On Anti-Doping In Sport.
The code applies to private sport organizations, but the convention makes it part of international law.
The new legislation aims to establish a centralized public body in charge of drug testing and record keeping, and was the subject of a recent presentation to the committee by Minister of Sports Anil Roberts. (CMC)
