Minister of Home Affairs, Edmund Hinkson, met with Regional Representative of the Organization of American States (OAS) Ambassador, Francis McBarnett, on Friday, to discuss a number of security issues.
The discourse ranged from the Drug Treatment Court to medical marijuana to anti-corruption.
McBarnett suggested that the team approach used by the Drug Treatment Court was a “useful mechanism” that could be replicated across the justice system.
He said that 23 clients had graduated from the Drug Treatment Court’s intervention programme after they successfully completed counselling, testing, technical or vocational training and life skills development courses.
The Minister and the OAS Representative also spoke about this hemisphere’s anti-corruption focus, inclusive of asset recovery as well as strengthening law enforcement and legislation.
On the point of medical marijuana, the officials examined arguments for and against decriminalisation in other OAS member states.
The officials also discussed scholarships for Barbadians and possible training opportunities for immigration, customs and law enforcement officers.
Minister Hinkson expressed his appreciation for the OAS’ support in these key areas. (BGIS)
