Wickham to Govt: Reverse job cuts

Government has been asked to reverse its decision to send home 3 000 workers and tell the country its rescue plan for the Barbados economy.
The call came yesterday from political scientist Peter Wickham, who said the ruling Democratic Labour Party (DLP) administration had an opportunity to discuss the crisis thoroughly and reveal its strategy before last February’s general election, but it had not done so since winning by a whisker of 16-14 seats in Parliament.
“I think what we have to ask them to do is reverse the decision to dismiss these 3 000 workers and introduce the plan that they claim that they had originally, and tell us more about how they plan to rescue the economy,” Wickham told callers on Starcom Network’s Brass Tacks Sunday.
He also said that the DLP was not interested during the last election campaign in having conversations about privatization, but had mentioned having a plan to save jobs and avoid the privatization of state-run entities like the Transport Board and the air and sea ports. (RJ)
