Barbados needs a national bipartisan discussion about the most realistic way to finance its university and college education, says Professor Nigel Harris, vice chancellor of the University of the West Indies (UWI).
He made the comment yesterday as both the Freundel Stuart administration and the UWI tried to reach a payment scheme for the $150 million debt owed by Barbados.
He spoke in the wake of a firm commitment the Government made to Harris, Cave Hill campus principal Sir Hilary Beckles and to others to pay off the huge arrears while keeping the country’s current financial obligations to the regional educational body up to date.
“From our perspective, the plan seems like a reasonable one,” Harris told the Sunday Sun in an exclusive interview yesterday before leaving the country.
