There’s a push by the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and the Blue Economy to ensure that Barbados’ reputation with relation to maritime issues is not damaged on the international market.

Speaking to the media this morning Minister Kirk Humphrey revealed that following a report done on an audit by the International Maritime Organisation, Barbados fell short in 21 areas, in terms of shipping agreements and shipping arrangements were identified.

“Most of it pertaining to legislation either being weak, non-existent, not being known by other people and the potential risks it poses for Barbados,” Humphrey said.

He was speaking during a tour of the Folkestone beach with the Coastal Zone Management to bring persons up-to-date on the Holetown Improvement Project.

Humphrey said he would be working closely with his ministry to ensure that those problems were identified with a matter of urgency.

“I’m working very closely with my ministry to ensure that we come up with a corrective plan of action to ensure that Barbados’ reputation in the international market is not damaged to ensure that persons who have ships that are registered here don’t pull their  business because they are potential economic impacts as well,” he said.
