Over to DPP

THE DECISION on whether the police officer who fatally shot a young man in Bridgetown four months ago will face charges now rests in the hands of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
And in the face of the deceased’s family seeking British help in getting the lawman before the court, Commissioner of Police Darwin Dottin has made it clear that he will not be pressured by external forces.
“We are a mature democracy, we have our judicial system, we subscribe to the rule of law and our processes will be allowed to work,” he said in an interview with the SUNDAY SUN.
He disclosed that the investigation into the April 3 shooting of 27-year-old Jamar Maynard was now completed and the file handed over to DPP Charles Leacock.
“Nobody can tell the DPP – except, I believe, in the case of treason – how to carry out his duties. The DPP is independent of the Police Service or police officers . . . .”
