The National Sports Council (NSC) has cancelled the annual summer camp, due to health concerns in relation to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
The camp, which was slated for July 6 to August 14, usually caters to 1 200 children each year, according to a media release.
Director of Sport at the NSC, Neil Murrell, said: “While the decision to cancel is unfortunate and will be disappointing to both parents and children, the council must put the health and safety of campers and staff first.
“Once we return to some level of normalcy where the COVID-19 pandemic is concerned, the summer camp should be on track to be held in 2021.”
Murrell said, however, that the NSC and the Youth Development Programme are hosting a joint community initiative BajeFit: Keeping the Community Alive; which is designed to engage people of all ages in fitness workouts.
According to the release, Murrell said initiatives like BajeFit not only encourage people to get active through fun workouts but also helps decrease the incidence of non-communicable diseases. (PR)
