GOODRIDE BALLERS overcame an early rough road to drive to a smooth 41-38 win over Progressive in a tense match in the Sir Roy Zone when the Barbados Workers’ Union Netball competition continued on Wednesday night at the Netball Stadium.

Some accurate long distance shooting from goal shooter Keryn Clarke (21/40) and Samantha Small (20/31) helped Goodride to squeeze out the victory after Progressive had moved from an 8-8 tie in the first quarter to lead 18-16 at the end of the second.

High scorer Michelle Rogers used her height and size to great advantage for Progressive to knock down 35 goals from 45 attempts. Defenders Stephian Shepherd and Danicia King struggled all night to stop Rogers.

Goodride’s defenders were more successful against Salisha Auguste, who netted just three goals from five attempts, as Goodride utilised their midcourt to stop the constant feed into Progressive’s attack circle. The shooting response from Clarke and Small also pulled off the win as they ended the third quarter 31-27 and kept out front.

In the Gabby Scott Zone, Police Boys and Girls Club arrested Norlink Jetstars 24-15 after leading by one goal at the end of the first three quarters. Monica Waithe scored 14 of 17 and Ginae Austin ten for 16 for the winners. For Jetstars, Shakeena Savoury scored 11 of 17, Malika Burgess three of 13 and former sprinter Shonte Cole one of two.

St James Stilettos wounded St George Lions 21-16 thanks to a game-high 14-of-17 shooting performance from Addis Wade and a seven-of-nine effort from Sharia Coppin. Chriska Padmore responded by scoring eight of 15, Deansha Padmore six of seven and Delesha Goddard two of four.

Warriors demolished Steve’s Building Works 38-14 in the Ulric Sealy Zone after a 7-0 run in the first quarter. Warriors’ Tiana Catlyn was almost perfect in scoring 25 of 26, with Keianna James adding 11 of 16 and Rachel Lewis two of three.

Shaquilla Babb countered with nine of 14 for Building Works, with Jennifer Seale scoring five of nine and Ronya Smithwick two of four.

The closest battle occurred in the Linda Brooks Zone with Police pipping Elite 30-29. Heather Belle scored all but two of Police’s goals from 37 attempts, with Karen Alleyne adding the two from five shots. Linda Bourne countered with 19 of 23 for Elite, while Azaria Sealy added 10 of 13. (KB)
