Richer lives

For valedictorian Rhyesa Joseph, graduating from the University of the West Indies (UWI) Cave Hill was like a crossroad between reward and responsibility.

The St Lucian, who gained first class honours with a Bachelor of Science degree in political science with international relations, made the point while addressing UWI’s evening graduation ceremony at Cave Hill on Saturday. She received her scroll from acting campus registrar Rommel Carter.

Basing her speech on an excerpt from a poem entitled Love After Love, penned by her fellow countryman and Nobel Laureate Derek Walcott who died this year, Joseph gave colleagues several pointers as they prepared for the world beyond university life.

Using an allegory of a feast, she advised the Social Science class of 2017 that while their degrees were valuable assets, they needed to be further enriched with more than just that. (AD)
